State Auditor Rob Sand today announced the Iowa Auditor of State Office is now hiring accountants with associate degrees to stem a nationwide shortage of accountants and auditors. The announcement was held at the Iowa State Capitol, where Sand was joined by representatives from DMACC, the largest undergraduate institution in Iowa.
“This is a win-win,” Sand said. “It unlocks opportunities for accountants with an associate degree, and it helps us fill positions in a tight labor market.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now 17 percent fewer Americans employed in accounting and auditing compared to 2019. Businesses and organizations across the country are feeling the pinch of the shortage.
“More than a dozen community colleges in Iowa offer two-year accounting programs,” Sand said. “I believe plenty of Iowans with a strong work ethic, common sense, and smarts chose to get a two-year degree, and we are going to start adding them to our workforce."
Currently, 365 students are enrolled in the DMACC Accounting Program. According to MD Isley, DMACC Vice President of Academic Affairs, 95 percent of DMACC students live and work in Iowa after graduation.
“There are many outstanding opportunities in Iowa’s workplace for community college graduates, including this new hiring initiative with the Iowa State Auditor,” Isley said.
The Auditor of State Office offers a competitive salary and benefits, including paid vacation and sick time, and enrollment in the Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS).
The Auditor of State Office also offers paid internships to students enrolled in accounting, finance and criminal justice programs. The full-time positions are offered during the summer and fall semesters and allow students to hone their skills under the direction and knowledge of the Auditor’s Staff.
