In a move that could preempt decisions reached by local school boards, Gov. Kim Reynolds recently said she would direct that Arizona students who are receiving in-person instruction must receive at least half of their schooling in-person.
Reynolds’ order would permit parents to opt for their children to do all of their schooling online, and requires accommodation for students to learn remotely if anyone in their household is at increased risk from COVID-19 from an existing health condition, according to reporting by WQAD8.
Some school districts, such as Des Moines, had intended for students to only attend in-person classes on one day per week.
”One of the most important milestones in our recovery effort is getting Iowa students back to school,“ Reynolds said during a news conference covered by WQAD8. “And while we all know this school year will be different than ever before, it’s critical that we prioritize bringing Iowa’s children back to the classroom safely and responsibly.”
