At 7:56 PM Thursday July 28, 2022, the Burlington Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire at 535 May Avenue in Burlington. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:59 to find smoke and flames showing on the exterior of a two-story single-family dwelling.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than fifteen minutes with assistance from the West Burlington Fire Department.
The property is owned by Brandon and Brendon Plowman. The home is currently under renovation and was not occupied at the time of the fire. Damages from the fire were contained to the exterior of the home and estimated at $5,000.00.
The fire is considered accidental and was most likely caused by a bottle rocket that struck the home and ignited exposed house wrap.
Five Burlington firefighters responded on the initial call as the other six on-duty firefighters were assigned to 3 medical calls that had been dispatched at 7:45, 7:49, and 7:52. Ten West Burlington firefighters responded on automatic aid. No other personnel or resources were needed as the fire was brought under control quickly. The Burlington Police Department and Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. There were no injuries.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 8:43 p.m.
