Jefferson County Health Center recently issued the following announcement.
Due to overwhelming interest, this event has reached its attendee cap and we are unable to register additional attendees at this time. We hope to do more educational events like this in the future!
February is American Heart Month, and JCHC is opening its doors to celebrate! Members of the public are invited to attend the Heart Health and Home Cooking event on Tuesday, February 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Attendees will learn about the Mediterranean diet, which was recently named the best overall diet by US News & World Report for the fifth consecutive year. The diet has been lauded for its food variety, ease of use, and healthiness, including its impact on the heart.
“There is so much to like about the Mediterranean diet,” said Colette Banda, JCHC Registered Dietitian. “It’s plant-based and prioritizes healthy fats, while also being flexible enough to allow for treats like red meat and sweets on special occasions.”
Many fad diets, such as the popular keto diet, focus on restricting or greatly reducing certain food groups, Banda explained. While the diet may help a person lose weight, it is not sustainable in the long-term. A nutritionally complex and varied diet, like the Mediterranean diet, is better for long-term health overall.
“The best diet is the one that you can stick with,” said Banda.
In addition to the presentation, guests will be treated to a free meal made with some of the common ingredients in the Mediterranean diet. Christine Engwall, JCHC Health & Wellness Manager, will be providing additional information on activities attendees can incorporate into their lives for overall heart health.
“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but it can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes,” said Engwall. “Maintaining a healthy diet, managing weight, avoiding smoking, and engaging in regular physical activity are all proven ways to reduce the chances of heart attack.”
This free event is sponsored by the JCHC Auxiliary, and pre-registration is required. Seating is limited to ensure social distancing. To register for this event, call Christine Engwall at 641-469-4289.
