Iowa Wesleyan University recently issued the following announcement.
In honor of February’s Black History Month, Iowa Wesleyan University is excited to celebrate the achievements of black individuals and acknowledge the support of civil rights activists.
A public storytelling event titled “Stories of Unknown Civil Rights Activists” will be hosted in the Social Hall of the Howe Student Activity Center on February 23, 2022, at 7 pm. Students, faculty, and staff will share stories about lesser-known Civil Rights events and individuals during this event.
Throughout February, the Black Student Union will be hosting several other student-focused events, including a karaoke night, a showing of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” and a spirit week.
LaShawnda Roberts ’19, Senior Financial Aid Counselor for Iowa Wesleyan, along with a planning committee, has actively organized each event. Roberts stated, “My goal in helping with arranging and planning these events for the students is not only to show our Black students that they are important, but that I have walked in their shoes as a Black alum.
I also believe this is important to show them that Iowa Wesleyan has faculty and staff that want to hear what they have to say as well as celebrate their achievements and the achievements and progress of Black figures and movements throughout history.”
