City of Keokuk issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.
City ordinances allow open burning of yard waste during October 1st through December 15th. The City of Keokuk discourages open burning and recommends that other alternatives be implemented. This includes composting, use of mulching mowers and bagging of yard waste. If you burn you must abide by the rules and regulations established by the City Council.
Rules & Regulations
A City Ordinance allowing burning of yard waste at Keokuk residences during the month of April and from October 1st through December 15th between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Open burning of yard waste (landscape debris such as leaves, small tree limbs, bark, tree seeds, dried weeds, brush and shrub trimmings) is subject to the Rules and Regulations:
1. Open burn days shall be determined by the Fire Chief. Residents should call 524-1642 to find out if a day is declared "Open Burn Day".
2. Do not burn within 50 feet of any structure or vehicle. Exception: Within 25 feet of any structure or vehicle when the pile size is limited to 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height.
3. No accelerates (gasoline, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, etc.) shall be used at start up or during the burning process. ACCELERATES ARE PROHIBITED! If it won't start without an accelerate it is too wet to burn!
4. A garden hose connected to a water supply or other suitable approved fire extinguishing equipment shall be readily available for use at the burn site.
5. An adult shall attend the fire until it has been extinguished.
6. Warnings may be issued at the discretion of the Fire Department. Obvious violations will be issued a citation.
7. Citations will be issued by the Fire Department. Violators shall be guilty of a simple misdemeanor, and upon conviction, shall be punished by a fine not to exceed one hundred dollars.
8. Burning is prohibited within two blocks of Keokuk Schools during regular school hours.
