Boards of Supervisors in Louisa and Des Moines counties have voiced their disagreement with an initiative that would develop guidelines for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Levee Safety Program, according to News Republican.
In a special digital meeting held earlier this month, the supervisors approved a letter for the Assistant Secretary of the Army R.D. James to officially oppose Engineer Circular (EC) 1165-2-218.
“They are trying to get rid of liability (by) handling it all over to the levee district,” Louisa County Board of Supervisors Chair Chris Ball said during the meeting, News Republican reported. “It will cause federal crop insurance to go up and it will probably triple or more their homeowner’s insurance to stay in the floodplain. The guide makes it so they can’t afford to live down on the floodplain.”
The EC aims “to consolidate and formalize policies and procedures for its Levee Safety Program,” News Republican reported. Its goal is to oversee flood risk connected to levees and give a plan for advantages in the long haul and to embrace steps amid flood risks.
