Iowa's retirement communities are being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with Wapello Specialty Care in Louisa County reporting 14 residents and 12 employees having positive cases, SW Iowa News reported.
“We’ve certainly followed all CDC and IDPH guidelines for everything from social distancing and visitation to PPE usage since Day 1,” Spokesman Jason Bridie told SW Iowa News.
All coronavirus cases have been isolated to help prevent the spread.
“That’s helped us keep some people from hopefully being exposed to the virus," Bridie told SW Iowa News.
Pearl Valley Rehabilitation and Health Care Center and Lutheran Living Senior Campus are also experiencing struggles from the pandemic.
Pearl Valley has seen a total of 80 positive cases and Lutheran has seen a total of 33 positive cases.
To deal with the positive cases, several activities at the homes have had to be halted as a way to stop the spread.
“It is an inconvenience, but they certainly recognize the reasons why we’re doing it. We’re working as hard as we can to take care of everyone, and we’re hopeful that we won’t see more spread of the virus among our staff or residents,” Bridie told SW Iowa News.
