Des Moines County discusses news on health, roads and jails

Des Moines County is providing updates on public health, road construction and jail capacity.

The Hawk Eye reports the county had its first death due to COVID-19 with the deceased individual within the age range of 61 to 80. 

A more than $2 million project involving the Des Moines County 99 Bridge over Flint Creek has been given a bid date of May 7. The bid meeting can be viewed on the county’s YouTube page. 

Among road work currently in progress is laying new pavement on North Gear Avenue, removing decks from the bridges on Mediapolis Road to prepare for their replacement and paving Iowa City Road.

Des Moines County Jail said it is under capacity with some of its inmates being housed in a different county. The reason for the out-of-county housing hasn’t been revealed.
