A number of manufacturing facilities throughout southeastern Iowa are still full of employees despite many businesses being ordered to close amid the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Iowa Starting Line, open manufacturers include Iowa Fertilizer Co., Roquette, Siemens Gamesa, Winegard Co., Sterzings Potato Chips and Titan Tire.
While some of these manufacturers would be considered essential under a statewide stay-at-home order, Iowa Starting Line states such an order is necessary to protect public health.
“Many workers cannot simply work from home as long as their employer is open, and they must continue to show up to large facilities filled with people,” the Iowa Starting Line writes in its article. “Even with the extra health precautions that those companies take, it’s putting Iowans at risk of both contracting COVID-19 and spreading it to others. A stay-at-home order would close some, if not all, of those work sites, reducing the risk and spread of the coronavirus.”
Iowa Starting Line said even if manufacturers can’t close, a stay-at-home order would be an effective coronavirus mitigation measure for the rest of the community.
