Lee County has established a new law enforcement unit to ensure repeat offenders stop committing crimes.
“People are sick and tired of seeing these people in and out of prison coming back," Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber said in a WGEM article. "They don't learn from the judicial or prison system."
Known as the Guns and Habitual Offenders Strike Team (GHOST), the unit is comprised of sheriff deputies and officers from the Fort Madison and Keokuk police departments. It is intended to work in partnership with the Lee County Narcotics Task Force.
Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff said the ability to have local law enforcement individuals on the unit provides an inside scoop into drug crimes.
“We obviously have places in our community that are areas of concern,” Rohloff said. “With the officer being from the patrol unit, they're aware of where these properties are and what they can focus on.”
