The Louisa County Board of Supervisors is concerned that mental health funding in the county will be cut under a new funding proposal by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
Reynolds has proposed raising the state sales tax by one cent in order to fund mandated programs for children’s mental health. Mental health and disabilities director Bobbie Wulf told the board that the funding formula could mean that rural counties would receive substantially less financial support than urban regions, the Muscatine Journal reported.
Reynolds' new funding formula must be approved by the state legislature. If the proposal passes, the Southeast Iowa LINK regional mental health consortium, of which Louisa County is a member, could lose $740,000 in revenue. Wulf said the funding shortfall could cause the region to cut needed mental health services.
“There will have to be discussions of what we can’t fund,” Wulf told the board.
