City of Fairfield issued the following announcement on Dec. 27.
Mayor Malloy issued his annual proclamtion naming January as Radon Action Month. Radon is a naturally occurring colorless, odorless radioactive gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. About half the buildings tested in Iowa have elevated radon levels beyond those deemed safe by the EPA.
Thanks to a donation by the Fairfield Kiwanis Club, 50 free radon test kits are available for Jefferson County residents starting January 2nd, from 9:00 to noon at the Jefferson County Environmental Health Office at 901 North 8th St Fairfield, IA, 641-472-2561.
