Iowa has been looking at ways to bring party lines together to make Iowa school’s safer. Some officials are hoping there are ways that will bring Democrats and Republicans together on the issue of school safety.
State Sen. Chris Cournoyer (R-LeClaire) has been visiting local school boards throughout the state to discuss ways to make sure schools and communities feel safe. According to a column in The Daily Iowan, after the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Cournoyer contacted her school board hoping to get more involved in the process. She noticed that some board members would be missing from meetings, so she ran for a seat on the Pleasant Valley School Board and won.
During her time on the board, she helped recruit more resource officers and install interlocking doors in schools. She was also in support of an app that allowed students and teachers to report suspicious behavior.
Cournoyer also supports an app that allows students to send alerts to school officials and law enforcement regarding anything potentially dangerous.
